How does waxing work?

Waxing is a safe and effective method of removing unwanted facial and body hair using heated wax. The warm wax is applied to the desired area using a wooden applicator, and then the wax is quickly removed, taking with it the unwanted hair.

What is the appropriate hair length for effective waxing?

A 1/4″ of growth should be present for effective waxing. This is normally about 10-14 days after shaving.

Are there any risks to being waxed?

If you are using any vitamin-A based products such as Retin-A, Renova, or Differin, or if you use products containing glycolic acid, salicylic acid or any other preparation designed to peel the skin, please refrain from using them at least 48 hours prior to and after your waxing service.

Waxing should not be performed on individuals who have used Accutane within the last year (minimum). Please inform Kimbra of the use of any of these products within the last 6 months. If you are experiencing dry skin or have been exposed to the outdoors (wind and sun) please notify Kimbra at the time of service. Avoid sun exposure/tanning for at least 3 days prior and post.

Avoid heavy exercise/sweating for 8 hours prior and post. Avoid aspirin and other blood thinners. One may take an over-the-counter pain medication such as Tylenol or ibuprofen one hour prior to waxing. Remember, one can follow all of these tips and still have some post-waxing irritation due to hormones, stress, general skin sensitivity or other factors. Therefore, for special occasions, it is best to schedule your waxing at least 7 days prior.

What exactly does a facial do for my skin?

A facial cleans, exfoliates and nourishes the skin to promote clear, well-hydrated and balanced skin.

  • Deep cleanses
  • Exfoliates
  • Increases circulation and detoxification
  • Relaxes the senses, nerves, and muscles
  • Stimulates the skin functions and metabolism
  • Slows down premature aging
  • Corrects or alleviates conditions such as dryness, oiliness, or redness
  • Softens wrinkles and age lines
  • Helps clear up blemishes and minor acne
  • Deeper product absorption of serums and home care products

Why are facials so important?

Healthy skin is moist, soft, smooth, with no breakouts, and somewhat acidic. The release of dead cells (exfoliation), is a natural biological process. Each cell moves from the basal layer of the epidermis towards the surface, dies, and is sloughed off after reaching the surface. As a result of this constant turnover, young skin is healthy, vibrant, and luminous. This process slows down with age.

The average rate of cell turnover for babies is 14 days; for teenagers, 21-28 days; for middle-age people, 28-42 days; for those 50 and older, 42-84 days. The general slowing of cell turnover is one of the causes of fine lines and wrinkles and the dulling of the skin surface. Aging of the skin is also influenced by many different factors including heredity, genetics, sun exposure, the environment, health habits, and general lifestyle.

Increasing the rate of exfoliation can diminish the visible signs of aging. It is encouraged to schedule a facial every four to six weeks; after that, at least four times a year, as the seasons change. Certain individuals may need more frequent or advanced treatments based on their own skin needs and goals.

A good facial to start with is Serenity of the Seasons or Age Rejuvenation. These facials will introduce and pre-condition your skin to future, more advanced treatments.

What can I do to maintain healthy skin when I'm in-between treatments?

Proper home care products are highly encouraged to maintain the integrity of your skin and will greatly enhance your in-office treatments. All services and product recommendations are approached progressively, as they work synergistically to condition your skin, thus giving your skin maximum results.

The Skin Suite proudly uses the DiamondTome Microdermabrasion Skin Resurfacing System.

What is skin resurfacing?

Resurfacing is a technique for removing the topmost layer of skin leaving it supple and vibrant. The DiamondTome Wand removes this layer of skin by gently exfoliating the skin with natural diamond chips, while at the same time vacuuming the dead skin cells away in a sterile and controlled manner. Removing this outer layer of dead skin cells leaves a smoother texture and promotes the growth of healthy new skin cells.

Resurfacing using a DiamondTome Wand is similar to particle microdermabrasion and chemical peels in its results but without the adverse effects of loose particles, irritation and skin reaction. Unlike other exfoliation treatments, the DiamondTome Skin Resurfacing System uses no abrasives to contaminate you or the environment.

The Advantages of DiamondTome Wands Resurfacing is a wonderful alternative to laser or chemical peels because it is non-invasive, non-surgical and requires no down time after treatment. Normal activities may be resumed immediately. Your skin will have a radiant glow, free of irritation and loose particles. Clients experience softer, smoother and cleaner skin after the 1st treatment. Treatment series vary from four to ten sessions depending on condition being treated and the type of skin.

What skin types can benefit, and what are the results?

  • Sun damaged skin – face, neck and shoulders
  • Age Spots – hands, face
  • Reduction of minor to moderate early aging fine lines – eyes, forehead
  • Blending of cosmetic surgery or laser treatments
  • Reduction of acne scarring
  • Extraction of blackheads and whiteheads
  • Minor scar revision
  • Hyperpigmentation reduction
  • Oily skin
  • Rejuvenation of skin health

How much discomfort will I experience?

Resurfacing treatments using the DiamondTome System are painless yet effective. The degree of effectiveness is controlled by a widely adjustable vacuum in conjuction with the varying coarseness of the DiamondTome Wands. Your skin care professional at The Skin Suite is trained to evalute the effectiveness of the treatment while at the same time ensuring your comfort. Leading plastic surgeons and dermatologists regard the DiamondTome System as being more gentle then other exfoliating systems, even at its highest settings.

How will I look after the treatment?

Your skin may look slightly flushed immediately after the treatment but should return to normal in 10-30 minutes. Your skin will look and feel smoother even after the first treatment and will continue to improve with additional treatments.

Am I an ideal candidate for advanced exfoliation?

The Skin Suite offers various advanced resurfacing and chemical exfoliation treatments. The treatment or series of treatments will be determined by your aesthetician after reviewing client health history and the goals desired by the client. Ideal candidates for resurfacing treatments and chemical peels are those with aging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, oily skin and clogged pores, scarring, hyperpigmentation (sun damage) and acne.

How many treatments will I need?

Resurfacing treatments are usually performed in a series, at least six as the rejuvenation does not become apparent until after at least three treatments. In rejuvenation, the time between the treatment should be two weeks to allow maximized reorganization of the dermal matrix between treatments. For acne clients, the time between applications can be one week, as reorganization of the dermis is not the goal; instead, it is the follicular treatment.

The series can be a goal in itself for achieving results, or can be the pre-treatment preparation of the skin to maximize another treatment, such as a peel. Peels are more intense then resurfacing due to the necrosis (death of the tissue) and involve more down time then resurfacing treatments.

Are there ways to enhance my results?

Negative responses of the resurfacing treatments and chemical peels can be minimized by pre-conditioning the skin, bringing it to maximum health through balancing and adding certain products prior to treatments. The skin is stronger and better prepared for treatment, leaping past the erythema mode to healing mode immediately and safely upon initiation of the treatments.

Pre-conditioning provides a stable foundation for the skin while receiving care and determines the amount of restructuring that can be accomplished by treatment.

What results can I expect from these treatments?

The results when followed correctly are well worth the time invested and will result in a healthier, more youthful appearance. The advantages of these treatments are improvement of color, freshness, texture, skin tone, the treatment of fine or medium-depth wrinkles, reduction of hyperpigmentation and acne, and will increase the cell renewal, hydration, elastin and collagen production.

What is Dermaplaning (or Epidermal Leveling)?

Dermaplaning is a simple and safe procedure for removing the outer most layers of dead skin cells leaving the skin immediately smooth, supple and vibrant. In addition to exfoliating the skin, it removes the fine vellous hair (peach fuzz).

Dermaplaning is beneficial for those with rough, dry skin; superficial hyperpigmentation; mild acne scarring and those with fine lines and wrinkles. Removing the epidermal skin also allows products to penetrate more readily into the deeper layers. Pregnant women who want deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents during their pregnancy, may have a dermaplaning procedure.

How is dermaplaning performed?

Using a #10 blade and a delicate touch, we simply abrade the surface of the skin using light feathering strokes. The treatment takes about 45 minutes.

If the fine hair on the face is removed, will it grow back thicker?

No. It is physiologically impossible for your vellous hair to grow back thicker. It will grow back at the same rate and texture as before the treatment.

Is the treatment safe?

This treatment is extremely safe when performed by adequately trained aestheticians such as ours. There is no more risk to the skin than when a man shaves his face. There is also no downtime associated with this procedure.

How often can dermaplaning be performed?

It can be performed approximately every 4 weeks. Dermaplaning the skin actually removes about 2-3 weeks worth of dead skin cells. We want the skin to complete its normal skin cycle of approximately 30 days.

Can dermaplaning be performed with a chemical peel?

Absolutely. We use a gentle resurfacer without harsh ingredients that is specific to your skin type and condition.

What skin types/conditions should not be treated?

We do not recommend this treatment for those suffering from acne and an over production of the sebaceous gland. The oils from the sebaceous gland need to travel up and connect with the vellous hair. (Vellous hair does not have oil/sebaceous glands) If the hair is removed, then the oils tend to stay below where they are prone to mix with bacterial colonies, ultimately stimulating more acne.

What is automated Micro-Needling?

Automated Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is a new innovation in aesthetic medicine for treating the appearance of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s texture, tone and color.

During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in a thicker epidermis with a softer appearance of wrinkles.

Automated micro-needling also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively, enhancing the effects in deeper layers of the skin.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of micro-needling are a reduction in the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, improved skin tone and texture and softer, younger-looking skin with fewer signs of aging.

Eclipse MicroPen Elite™ also has a positive effect on hyper-pigmentation as well as on hypo-pigmentation, acne scars, traumatic scars and stretch marks and generally creates a fresher appearance or glow to the skin.

What areas of the body can I treat?

Eclipse MicroPen Elite™ can be used on all parts of the body; Face, neck, décolleté, arms, hands, legs, abdomen and back.

How is the procedure done?

A sterile needle-tip containing 12 tiny micro-needles is attached to the Eclipse MicroPen Elite™.

Your skincare professional will apply a thin layer of topical gel to your skin and select the appropriate setting based on your unique needs.

Next, in a single motion, the pen will be gently pressed against the skin while simultaneously gliding in one direction until the entire treatment area has been covered.

What does it feel like?

The feeling associated with the Eclipse MicroPen Elite™ is similar to light sandpaper being moved across the skin.

While some areas are more sensitive than others, the speed of the reciprocating needle tip reduces discomfort while the applied hydrating gel also makes the treatment more tolerable.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure takes 15-30 minutes depending on the size of the area treated.

What is the downtime?

Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin.

The total healing time depends on the depth of needles used and the number of overlapping passes your skincare professional performs. On average, patients are red up to 2 to 4 days. Many patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours.

Utilizing a post treatment kit and recommendations provided by your skincare provider will help to speed up the healing process.

When will I see results?

Patients notice an immediate “glow” to their skin. Visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues.

How many treatments will I need?

Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of at least 2-3 treatments spaced about 4 weeks apart.

For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 4 week intervals.
